FOR DERBY CHAPEAUX, If you are coming to Louisville, Kentucky to attend the Kentucky Derby, you simply must wear a hat to compliment your derby ensemble. May 6, 2006 is the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs will be a virtual sea of beautiful women in stunning hats. Hats have come to be one of the most important fashion accessories for the Derby. Over 100,000 people attend the Derby each May and 50,000 of those attending are women…… in hats. The following is an excerpt from a newspaper article in the Courier Journal by Byron Crawford that was published April, 1999: After 14 years of designing and selling Derby hats, Georgi, of Louisville has learned a thing or two about her trade…. Gutmann’s designs vary from simple, elegant bows with a single handmade flower and distinctive polka dots to hatbands that she embroiders with racing scenes …. The ideal Derby hat is one with a brim wide enough to shield the eyes from the sun, but not so wide it is hard to manage in the breeze… "I sell to a lot of out-of-town visitors. The vast majority of women who come from out of town Derby week, come in without a hat –thinking they’ll get a hat when they get to Louisville, the hats in Louisville, at this point, are pretty picked over. I LOVE HATS!!! There is nothing more beautiful, elegant and mysterious than a woman wearing a hat. It is simply not true that you don’t look good or won’t feel comfortable wearing a hat. You just haven’t found the right hat for YOU. I have made many converts that come back year after year to buy my hats who originally told me they don’t like hats. I tell my customers that to feel comfortable in a hat it takes three main ingredients –
The right style of hat and brim for your face and the best color scheme for your hair and skin tones can make all the difference. The brim of the hat should be about two inches above the eyebrow and usually worn at a slight angle – men should look under the brim to see your face. This makes you more mysterious and also when you look up to see them it gives a straight line for your neck, making it look long and elegant.
